Washington, D.C. —  OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates mourns the lives lost and those injured in the recent shooting in San Diego and strongly condemns the continued rise of gun violence impacting communities across the nation.

The shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which claimed three lives and injured others, has left communities grieving and fearful as authorities continue investigating the attack as a hate crime. This horrific act of violence against a place of worship is deeply appalling and serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of hate and unchecked gun violence.

OCA stands in solidarity with the victims, survivors, families, and the broader Muslim community during this difficult time. No one should fear for their safety while practicing their faith or simply attending school.

This tragedy also comes amid another series of shootings in Austin that injured multiple individuals, underscoring the urgent need for stronger action to address gun violence nationwide. Communities across the country continue to experience the devastating consequences of violence that leave lasting trauma on families and neighborhoods alike.

“As communities mourn yet another senseless act of violence, we cannot continue responding with empty thoughts and prayers while lives are being stolen and communities are left traumatized,” said Thu Nguyen, Executive Director of OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates. “Our elected officials must stop perpetuating racist rhetoric and fear that fuel hate and violence in this country. Their words have consequences. Every person deserves to feel safe in their community, school, workplace, and place of worship, and communities should not have to keep paying the price for inaction.”

OCA calls on leaders at every level to strengthen protections against hate-fueled violence, invest in community safety, and pursue meaningful solutions to address the ongoing crisis of gun violence in America.
