Washington, D.C. — OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates condemns the blatant fascist attack targeting U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar at her home in Washington, D.C., and the white supremacist mass-shooting attack targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. These acts of hate and intimidation are deeply troubling reminders of the dangers posed by the normalization of xenophobia, racism, and political violence in our country.
No elected official, religious community, or individual should be subjected to intimidation or threats because of their identity, beliefs, or public service. OCA stands in solidarity with Rep. Omar, the Hindu community in Aurora, and the broader Aurora and Chicago communities.
Immigrants are the foundation of this country. Anti-immigrant hate is anti-American. The United States has been shaped by generations of immigrants who have helped build our communities, strengthen our economy, and enrich our nation's culture. Attempts to portray immigrants as outsiders or threats undermine the very principles of equality, freedom, and belonging that define our democracy.
Our elected officials have a responsibility to reject hate and protect the constitutional rights and dignity of all people. They must be held accountable to the people they represent and ensure that everyone is treated with respect and afforded equal protection under the law.
OCA will continue to stand alongside those targeted by hate and advocate for a country where everyone can live, worship, serve, and participate in civic life without fear. We remain committed to protecting the safety, dignity, and rights of all people, regardless of race, religion, national origin, or immigration status.
Our communities belong here. Our voices matter. We will not allow hate to define who we are as a nation.
