Washington, D.C. — OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates Executive Director Thu Nguyen released the following statement after President Joe Biden's speech calling for the Senate to act on voting rights legislation:

"The January 6th insurrection may have failed to overturn a free and fair election, but threats to democracy still loom. Bills making it harder for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders to vote are being proposed in nearly every state, while our communities continue to live in fear of violence and voter suppression.

"We stand united in our commitment to protect AANHPI communities’ access to the ballot box. Congress must swiftly pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to restore critical protections that have been gutted in the last decade. We support President Biden's call today—and meaningful change will only be possible through changes to the Senate rules."
