Our community’s histories and stories have been told by various types of people through various kinds of platforms. Some have been beautiful portrayals of resilience and solidarity, but too many narratives about AANHPIs have been washed in colonialism and harmful stereotypes. Groups like AAJA, CAAM, and others formed in order to take hold of these narratives and develop more AANHPI storytellers, and many journalists, academics, and artists are working to ensure authentic representation.
-
Mental health issues and care continue to be taboo subjects in the AAPI community. However, we know that, from youth starting grade school to even the most accomplished members of society, many are struggling to navigate their mental health. JACL and OCA invite some of our community's beloved public figures to hear their story on how their mental health journeys have been and what they wish their community knew.

The AAPI community has been shunned out of our country’s narrative long enough to reinforce us as perpetual foreigners that do not belong here because we don’t have a story to tell. What other way to share our histories with the world than with our own National AAPI History and Culture Museum? In this workshop, join our esteemed advocates for an AAPI History and Culture Museum to discuss the importance of its existence, where we are currently in its fruition, and what we can do to bring this initiative along faster.

General/Advocacy Track
The General/Advocacy Track offers a diverse slate of sessions for attendees with varying interests, including civic engagement, mental health, education, racial equity, and more.

We have the power to create change, and it all starts with effective campaigns! AAPIs have been at the center of a historic surge in electoral participation and we have an incredible opportunity to continue that momentum for 2022 and beyond. To do so, our voter engagement campaigns must be rooted in the communities they serve while utilizing effective strategies and tactics. We’ll be breaking down campaigns into smaller components, exploring campaign logistics, discussing power and the cycle of change, and recognizing the impact of great campaigns.

Given the large representation of Asian Americans in Silicon Valley, there is a rosy perception of AAPI representation in the tech industry. But sheer numbers do not portray the fact that very few AAPIs make it to the boardroom-level positions. While research shows that Asian Americans are hired into tech jobs more than any other racial group, and very few advance to senior management levels, what other opportunities exist outside of the tech sphere? Representatives from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Comcast will share thoughts on how to break the bamboo ceiling in the corporate setting but also shed light on the many opportunities and avenues available outside of tech, particularly in the industry's highest echelons. "In response to the increased rise of anti-Asian/American, xenophobic, harassment, and hate towards marginalized communities of color, it's important to be aware of the tools to combat these types of oppression. The Situational Awareness Workshop (SAW) is an interactive bystander intervention training that will teach people how to become confident and effective bystanders against racism and discrimination. At the end of the training, each participant will have the tools to be able to intervene as a bystander whenever they see or experience harassment.
"
In this presentation, Lydia Chu and Jenny Yip Marshall will dive deeper into the Atlanta shooting and its contributing factors, examine the national context of the IMI, and discuss the main components enabling the continued victimization, exploitation, and trafficking of Asian women in the industry.

"Anti-Asian hate and racism has been on the rise. And unfortunately, some individuals have bought into the false narratives written by the white dominant culture that was purposely put in place to pit Asian and Black communities against each other. We need to talk about anti-blackness and work to dismantle white supremacist actions in communities of color.
Join us to:
• Understand how similar the experiences of Asian and Black communities are and why it's critical to be in solidarity with one another
• Recognize how the dominant culture works to keep our communities divided
Discuss what we can do as co-conspirators and allies for the Black community including getting tips and ideas on how you can start the conversation about anti-blackness in your own family and community"

Since the escalation of tensions between U.S. and the PRC, scores of Chinese American scientists have been jarred from their academic world. Either they or their colleagues were placed under surveillance, interrogated and seen their labs upended, grants lost, graduate students released and placed on interminable leave while their careers, finance and mental health withered. Initially resistant to the idea of organizing, faculty across campuses in the U.S. have become activists even though they may not identify themselves as ones. Hear the stories of the speakers and their journeys to speaking out and finding voice before leaders of academia, government, and industry and the progress that they've made alongside civil rights organizations.

AAPI Voices is a collective from Houston, TX born out of artivism (arts / activism) in 2018. In understanding that the current sociopolitical landscape excludes certain narratives from public knowledge, AAPI Voices aims to uplift and engage some of the most affected by systemic change, the youth. Currently, AAPI Voices are archiving oral histories of a burgeoning movement, spearheaded by Houston Collective Reimagining Education to include Asian American Ethnic Studies into the K-12 Texas Curriculum. In their workshop, they will be presenting a collection of short films from their records and participate in a Q&A about who they are, what they do, and where they see this heading. An interactive art installation will be presented and attendees will have a chance to record their own stories before and after the workshop.

"In recent years, “equity and inclusion” has become one of the hottest catch phrases in workplaces across the country. The Black Lives Movement and protests around the world in support of Black lives have also brought these issues to the forefront as priorities for organizations. Organizations are holding trainings, and staff are being provided resources to help them learn how to be anti-racist.
Being “woke”, however, isn’t enough. In fact, it can foster complacency and an inability to recognize the continued need for evolution. Executive leadership (Boards of Directors and CEOs) are still primarily white and do not reflect the growing racial and ethnic groups in this country. Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, Black, Indigenous, Latiné(x) and Other People of Color recount facing racism and limited professional mobility at work. This workshop will give participants tools to move from awareness (i.e. being woke) to substantive anti-oppression culture change. We will share a culture change methodology to assist nonprofits and businesses to make the internal shift from aspirational equity and inclusion to actual anti-oppression spaces. We'll also discuss why this critical discussion is timely now during ""the Great Resignation"".
This workshop is best designed for those in middle management or senior leadership with at least 10+ years of work experience.
Goals:
• Understand what it takes to move into a truly an anti-racist and anti-oppressive culture
• Determine where your workplace is situated on the spectrum of implementing an anti-oppression framework.
Recognize common barriers to culture change and how to mitigate them"

An important trait of a leader is being able to mediate and facilitate disagreements or other problems in the workplace. However, this can be difficult for women, people of color, young professionals, and especially those who carry more than one of these identities. This discussion between seasoned leaders of color will provide some guidance on how best to resolve conflict without endangering oneself or others.
