Honoring 9/11: Remembering Heroes, Confronting Hate

By Thu Nguyen

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost and the heroes who emerged on September 11th. This day stands as a solemn reminder of the courage, resilience, and selflessness shown by first responders, community members, and ordinary people who faced unimaginable danger to protect others. Their actions continue to inspire us and underscore the enduring strength of our communities in times of crisis.

Yet, the legacy of 9/11 is not only one of heroism and loss — it is also a reminder of the consequences of fear and prejudice. In the aftermath, South Asian, Muslim, Sikh, and Arab Americans were often unfairly targeted, experiencing harassment, discrimination, and acts of violence. Tragically, these threats persist today. Recently, Harpal Singh, a Sikh elder, was violently assaulted in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven in North Hollywood and remains in critical condition. His attack is part of a larger, disturbing pattern of hate-fueled violence that continues to affect our communities.

These incidents highlight the urgent need to confront prejudice in all its forms. We cannot allow fear to justify targeting entire communities or turning strangers into scapegoats. Honoring the memory of 9/11 requires more than reflection — it demands action. It demands that we stand together to challenge hate, support those affected, and work toward a society in which no one lives in fear because of their faith, race, or appearance.

OCA remains steadfast in its commitment to combating discrimination through education, advocacy, and community solidarity. As we remember the victims and heroes of September 11th, we reaffirm our dedication to justice, equity, and inclusion. Let this day remind us not only of what we have lost, but also of the work that remains: to build a nation and a world rooted in compassion, understanding, and the shared humanity of all.
