Founded in 1973, OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national non-profit, membership-driven civil rights organization based in Washington, D.C. with over 50 chapters and affiliates around the country. Touching hundreds of thousands of AAPIs each year, OCA works with its organizational partners, members, chapters, and supporters to empower the next generation of leaders.
Overview of the Position
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates seeks a full-time Executive Director to lead the organization, programmatic, advocacy, and communications work. The key role of this position is to advance the mission of the organization through supporting staff and setting a strategic vision for the future.
The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to engage diverse stakeholders ranging from local community members to policy makers to corporate partners. He/she/they will be an exceptionally quick learner, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and be able to work both independently and as a team member. The candidate should have experience in non-profit management. Additionally, this individual should be familiar with the diverse needs of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The individual reports to the CEO and National President, and serves as the organization’s main day-to-day operations staff. General responsibilities include oversight of daily operations, supervision of staff, support of chapter development and board governance, fiscal oversight, fundraising, relationship building, and outreach. The position also requires responsibility of oversight of management at the OCA National Center.
During the initial transition period, the ED reports to OCA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who, in turn, reports to the OCA National President. The National Board of Directors and Executive Council Officers are available to support the transition process. Once the transition is complete, the ED will report directly to the OCA National President.
· Manage and supervise all of the organization’s full-time staff and an annual budget of $1.5 million;
· Oversee all programming including deliverables of outputs and outcomes, goals, and benchmarks;
· Direct the organization’s national public policy work including rapid-response, organizational strategic policy direction, and management of external partnerships - setting strategic advocacy vision through an assessment of the national political landscape, building community capacity, and facilitating grassroots mobilization efforts;
· Build and interact with the organization’s national network of chapters and membership – including addressing capacity, growth, and sustainability;
· Oversee key membership initiatives, including management of CRM database;
· Supervise the organization’s major events including the OCA National Convention and OCA Corporate Achievement Awards and others as needed;
· Advise and provide a framework for strategic communications including social media, media inquiries, and press releases for the organization;
· Interact, manage, and navigate complex relationships within the AAPI community including serving as a liaison to other national civil rights groups and external stakeholder meetings;
· Direct all fundraising efforts, including management of corporate partnerships through the organization’s business advisory council, creating a sustainable revenue model, and strategize to cultivate diverse streams of funding;
· Oversee organizational finances, including annual third party auditing, monthly reporting of profit/loss balance sheet, programmatic budgets, assets, and expenditures;
· Provide guidance and resources to the organization’s board of directors and affiliate leaders to maximize impact in growth in programming, fundraising, and advocacy locally and nationally – including board meetings, executive retreats, and other events;
· Other duties as assigned by the National President and/or Executive Council/National Board
Experience and Skills Required
• 7-10 years of experience with non-profit management;
• Advocacy and policy analysis background, including familiarity with the federal legislative process, experience communicating with policy makers, and ability to communicate complex policy issues in a comprehensible way
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
• Thorough understanding of the broader AAPI political landscape
• Ability to cultivate relationships and work with relevant stakeholders
• Proven track record of fundraising in individual giving, corporate sponsorships and foundation grants for a $1.0+ million budget
• Ability to work independently and self-identify projects and opportunities to improve the organization
• Ability to manage staff in a compassionate and comprehensive way
• Ability, willingness, and flexibility to work extended hours and to travel as needed
• Must be able to work in the U.S.
• Knowledge of education, immigration, technology/telecommunications, census, or voting rights policy issues as they relate to AAPIs
• Knowledge and experience in building management and property care
• Familiarity with OCA and/or its chapters
• Experience working in nonprofit, social justice, or civil rights environments
• Mainstream and ethnic media familiarity
• Strong conflict resolution skills
• Proficient skills in Microsoft office and social media platforms.
• Bachelor’s Degree required. Graduate Degree preferred.
B.A. or equivalent four-year degree required. Advanced degree in public policy, law, social sciences, ethnic studies, or other relevant fields is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
