Policy Updates: January 2018

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates has continued to work closely with our fellow AAPI partners on mobilizing to urge Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act with the Continuing Resolution. On January 10th and 16th , we collectively organized a National AAPI Call-in Day to Members Of Congress, demanding that they support the DREAM Act by taking a stand in voting NO for the January 19th deadline, if it wasn't included in the spending bill. However, members still could not negotiate by then, which resulted in a government shutdown on January 20th . It only lasted a few days,  and was re-opened on Monday, January 22nd , allowing the government to operate under a short-term Continuing Resolution until February 8th, 2018.  In the mean time, OCA will continue to advocate on prioritizing immigration reform and stand firm on its support of a clean DREAM Act.

In addition, we have met with immigration staffers of Members of Congress to discuss the Reuniting Families Act, which will be reintroduced by Congresswomen Judy Chu's office in the coming months. We have expressed our concerns about the threat the current administration poses to family immigration and asked that members cosponsor the bill, and so far, all have agreed to do so. We will be meeting with more offices in the next month and will keep you updated. If you are affected by this or know someone who is, we encourage folks to share their stories.
