Washington, DC – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates strongly opposes President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to fund his border wall, in addition to Congress’ approval of $1.375 billion for wall construction.

The increased funding for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, and the declaration of a national emergency by the President without congressional approval only enhance President Trump’s anti-immigrant sentiments and efforts to separate families. Undoubtedly, this raises immediate concern for AAPIs as we have witnessed the harmful impact recent immigration policies have had on Southeast Asian deportations, particularly with Cambodian and Vietnamese communities.

“Not only does this undermine the integrity of our democracy, but the militarization of border communities and separating families is inhumane and dubious public policy,” says Roland Hwang, OCA National Vice President of Public Affairs.

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
