Washington, DC - OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates strongly condemns President Trump’s latest immigration proposal because it continues his inhumane family separation priorities. Last week, the Administration announced a plan that reverses the decades-long priority for immigrants to sponsor their family members, instead prioritizing high-skilled workers based on age, education, skills, and English-proficiency. The plan fails to resolve concerns with current immigration laws and instead would:

·      Reduce family reunification and diversity visas;

·      Reduce protections for asylum seekers and unaccompanied child migrants;

·      Exclude a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers; and,

·      Increase enforcement efforts at the border.

 “The proposal is a direct attack on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) families, who are among the top beneficiaries of both family reunification and diversity visas,” said Roland Hwang, OCA Vice President of Public Affairs. “Forcing ‘high skilled workers’ to choose between keeping their families together or starting a new life in the United States without them is cruel and discourages immigration to the United States. This policy is reminiscent of the Chinese Exclusion Act that left thousands of Chinese workers who built America’s infrastructure stranded without their families. OCA urges Congress to reject this proposal and find a solution that keeps families together.”

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national civil rights organization dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
