"Judge Edward Chen has a long history of being a fair and impartial jurist. At a time when our judicial system lacks diversity his confirmation marks a great step forward to ensuring that Asian Americans are truly represented in all sectors of our society. OCA celebrates the decision and congratulates Judge Chen for his significant achievement,” said President Ken Lee.
Throughout the years, Judge Chen has built his reputation as an accomplished civil rights lawyer. Among his impressive track record he was part of a team that overturned the wartime conviction of Fred Korematsu. As a community advocate he has served the Asian American community by representing minority owned small businesses as well as consumers against discrimination.
In the past, Judge Chen served judicial clerkships for U.S. District Judge Charles B. Renfrew for the Northern District of California and U.S. Circuit Judge James R. Browning of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In addition to publishing over 300 published opinions he has also presided over 20 civil and criminal trials.
Judge Chen was rated "Unanimously Well Qualified" by the American Bar Association. He is the first Asian American Judge to serve in the Northern District of California.
OCA acknowledges and thanks all those who have paved the way for this historic confirmation vote, including President Barack Obama for his nomination; Senate Majority Leader Reid and the Senate Republic Leadership for the agreement on Judge Chen’s roll call vote; Senators Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy for their long-term support; and OCA partners, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Asian American Justice Center for their leadership on behalf of the community.
