Census Bureau’s national door-knocking operations is underway!
Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 26 in Northern
Virginia and Washington, D.C., OCA will join the Asian American Legal
Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and other APA community leaders to
promote the Census Bureau’s Non-Response Follow-up Phase. The U.S.
Census Bureau Director Robert Groves will join participants in the
Northern Virginia event, being held at a large Asian Pacific American
Participants will dramatize the message
"when the Census comes to your home, open the door” by literally opening
a free-standing door, donated by the Home Depot. Census employees
dressed as census-takers, carrying a white, government-issued
identification card and an official U.S. Census Bureau black shoulder
bag, will be standing on the other side of the door.
Across the nation, census-takers have been
canvassing neighborhoods to follow up with households that did not
return their census forms by mail. This phase of the census, which began
on May 1, is expected to last no later than early July.
Speakers hope to allay fears and encourage individuals to cooperate
fully with census-takers. They will focus on concerns or activities
specific to each community, the confidentiality of census information,
and ways to ensure safety and safeguard privacy.
