The Incident:

On October 16, 2013, the show aired a skit titled "Kids Table.” In this segment, one child declared that an alternative to solving the debit ceiling was to "kill all the Chinese.” This was later picked by Kimmel as a discussion topic, and the position was reiterated again by the same child and supported by another. Although Kimmel dismissed the views of the children, expressions that demonize APAs, such as the aforementioned comments, are unacceptable. A pre-recorded segment referencing genocide as political solution even stated by children in jest should never be aired on network television.

Jimmy Kimmel's Response:

Genocide is not a joke, and Jimmy Kimmel's apology is not enough.

How OCA Responded:

  1. OCA engaged ABC executives in dialogue and are trying to procure an in-person meeting with both ABC executives and Jimmy Kimmel representatives;
  2. OCA also filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting a formal investigation of the show and are meeting with FCC representatives to apply further pressure;
  3. Additionally, OCA will be contacting the sponsors of the Jimmy Kimmel show to express our outrage at the inaction of ABC and Jimmy Kimmel.

 What We Want:

  1. Implementation of policy and procedural modifications at ABC that will prevent an incident like this from occurring again;
  2. Appropriate disciplinary action and training for staff involved in the development and approval of these segments;
  3. Improved diversity and inclusion practices in recruitment, retention, and promotion of Asian Pacific Americans at all levels of the organization;
  4. A thorough investigation by the Federal Communications Commission on the usage of children in programming, along with proper regulatory guidance to protect minors from hateful language, discussions, and experiences
