Houston, TX — The Greater Houston Chapter of OCA (OCA-GH), in partnership with the Asian American Legal Center of Texas (AALC), will hold a press conference to announce the release of the Asian American Pro Bono Legal Services Directory at 12PM on Friday, January 19, 2007 at Kim Son Restaurant (10603 Bellaire Boulevard). Lunch will be served.

The Asian American Pro Bono Legal Services Directory is an unprecedented publication, providing information to the Asian Pacific American (APA) community on where to seek low-cost assistance for legal issues. The 50-page directory emphasizes legal services, but also includes other community organizations geared to help members of the APA community. The directory features descriptions of community services in English, Chinese and Vietnamese. Each listing also indicates what languages are spoken at each organization. This free directory will be distributed throughout Houston at APA businesses and community service organizations. The directory and other publications, such as the OCA/Allstate Hate Crimes Manual, may also be obtained by contacting OCA-GH.

Deborah Y. Chen, President of OCA-GH, said, "This directory is an important first for our community. This is the first time a directory of legal service providers for low-income Asian Americans, translated into Chinese and Vietnamese, has been published and widely distributed. This document can be used by lawyers to refer clients as well as by members of the community such as Hurricane Katrina evacuees, thousands of whom are Asian American."

The directory is a product of the first Asian American Pro Bono Summit, held on November 2, 2006 and organized by OCA-GH and AALC. The summit was moderated by Texas Access to Justice Commissioner Daniel David Hu. Summit participants included community leaders and representatives of over 40 organizations serving the low-income APA community. The summit and directory were supported by a grant from the Asian American Bar Foundation, with additional funds for directory printing costs from the McDonald’s Corporation.
