Issues in Asian Pacific America

The issues that affect Asian Pacific Americans are as vast as the many languages and ethnicities encompassed in the racial group. This plenary focuses on three specific and pertinent issues to APAs in this upcoming election: immigration, education, and voting rights. Speakers will discuss the intersecting nature of these issues, how they affect APAs, and how the APA community can influence the outcomes of these policy areas through the midterm elections.

State of APAs: Beyond the Model Minority

Asian Pacific Americans are portrayed as a monolithic and largely privileged population, oftentimes surpassing their white counterparts in socioeconomic status. However, that stereotype masks the stark social, educational, and economic disparities within the Asian Pacific American community. The State of the APAs plenary examines the different portraits of the Asian Pacific American community in poverty and in education.
