WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates calls on Congress to support the bipartisan BRIDGE Act, to provide provisional protection to undocumented individuals brought to the United States as children.

On Friday, Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced legislation called the BRIDGE Act. This legislation would extend the protection of undocumented individuals provided by the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program for a period of three years. The DACA program was introduced by President Obama in 2012 as a way for undocumented individuals brought to the United States as children to obtain work permits and temporary legal status.

“We thank Senators Durbin and Graham for introducing the urgently needed BRIDGE Act,” said Leslie Moe-Kaiser, OCA National President. “Though this bill is certainly not a replacement for comprehensive immigration reform and though it does not protect the entire body of undocumented individuals residing in this country, it is now of critical importance that all Senators and members of Congress support this bill. In recent days, we have also seen President-Elect Trump express an interest in protecting these young immigrants. We hope that this expression was in good faith and we expect the president-elect to throw the full weight of his influence behind this bipartisan act to protect this vulnerable population. It is now time for us to honor our commitment to those individuals who sought relief from DACA and protect them from deportation. We cannot continue to jeopardize the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people who contribute to our society day in and day out.”

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
