WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates applauds Congressman Mike Honda for reintroducing the Reuniting Families Act.

Earlier today, Representative Mike Honda, OCA, and member organizations of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) came together on Capitol Hill to celebrate the reintroduction of the Reuniting Families Act. The bill improves the current family immigration system by increasing the number of available visas and making the process faster for those currently waiting for a visa.

“We thank Congressman Mike Honda for championing the cause of immigrant families. He has been a stalwart supporter of reuniting families and fixing our broken immigration system. Over the years, we have seen this necessary process, one currently housing over 4.4 million visas, compromised in bulk legislation and targeted for elimination. We cannot allow that to happen anymore,” said Leslie Moe-Kaiser, OCA National President. “There are currently 1.8 million family members of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders waiting for a visa, many often wait between ten to twenty five years to come to the United States. Family reunification is a central issue for Asian American and immigrant communities, and this bill speaks to our need for a family reunification visa fix for community.”

“OCA is proud to support this bill and work closely with Congressman Honda and our partner organizations at the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans to further support for this bill. To that end, we will be launching a social media campaign this month in collaboration with our partners to highlight immigrant family reunification stories. Our immigration system must strive to keep families whole, not split them apart,” concluded Moe-Kaiser.

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
