Marcus (third from left) discusses AAPI identity with a group of his peers as a part of the internship program

When I applied to the OCA Summer Internship, I did so in hopes of learning how to better serve the Asian American community. Coming from an artistic and academically focused background, I felt I needed to learn more tangible skills to create sustainable change for marginalized people. After being accepted into the program and spending the summer in DC, I can confidently say I found something far greater and worthwhile than anything I could've expected.

I could go on and on about my summer highlights, but let's stick to the major ones: For starters, I was placed at an inspiring organization that consistently challenged me to work harder. At OCA National, I found a supportive mentor whose inspirational words remain captivating and relevant, no matter when I call him for advice even today. Most importantly, I got the opportunity to meet a group of like-and-unlike-minded people, all of whom shared an interest in exchanging personal stories that highlighted the differences we all brought to the table. Through these various interactions, I learned how to navigate my own sense of self within a larger community.

The OCA Summer Internship isn't just a program that offers students exposure to public policy or fosters professional development. Rather, it is a unique opportunity where the intersections of leadership, community, and personal identity come together to create a vibrant collision that redefines an individual's passion. It is an experience you and a group of other students share, creating a family despite the vast diversity. I cannot stress enough how much I got from my time in DC, which has only continued to inform the path I chose to follow today.

For those of you wanting a nurturing, challenging, and transformative experience, please apply. You won't regret it.
