WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates condemns calls for new Muslim exclusion policy.
Earlier today, a policy was proposed to ban immigration and travel for all Muslims into the United States. This comes after a recent rise in xenophobia due to terror attacks.
“This proposed plan to ban all travel by Muslims bears a frightening parallel to the Chinese Exclusion Act, which similarly relied on fear and white supremacy to marginalize an entire group of people for the better part of a century,” said Ken Lee, OCA Chief Executive Officer. “As Chinese Americans, my family knew the pain of being excluded from American society because of discriminatory beliefs. I fear for our political system when those at the top are calling for such extremist and xenophobic policies.”
“This proposal is both brazenly illegal and also runs counter to the principle of religious freedom that is enshrined in the First Amendment of the constitution,” continued Lee. “In times of great crisis it falls to us to be better than our past and instead of succumbing to fear we must become stronger as a nation. We as Asian Pacific American advocates stand in solidarity with Muslim Americans to strongly condemn a return to exclusion.”
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
