Volunteer for Tax-Aide and Help Us Meet Our Goal!
When we took on the AARP Tax-Aide program this year, we set a goal of impacting low and middle income AAPIs in a place that is impactful: their checkbook. Many AAPIs do not know that they can get their taxes done for free, and are frequently the victims of high cost tax services and scams. Today we are proud to announce that we have recruited almost 400 potential volunteers for this important program, thereby laying the groundwork for our community to take advantage of this free service!

Be a part of our success story and help us meet our goal of 500 volunteers!

Visithttp://bit.ly/TAXAIDEVOLUNTEERS to sign up before October 25th, 2015! For more information please visit our website atwww.ocanational.org/?taxaide.

Call for GET OUT THE VOTE Volunteers in DC, Cleveland, and Eastern and Central Virginia!
Election Day is less than a month away and OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates is calling for volunteers to encourage others to go out and vote! Historically, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders experience one of the lowest turnout rates of any other demographic, and in 2010, Asian American voter turnout was a mere 31%. Help OCA - APA get folks to the polls, so that we can drastically increase our political voice!
We need volunteers to make calls out to the community, using predicted dialers, to remind folks to go out and vote on Tuesday, November 3rd! No specific skills are necessary, other than your passion for Get Out the Vote (GOTV)!
To volunteer in the DC area please use the directions below. For Cleveland, Eastern and Central Virginia, please contact Janet Namkung, the Civic Engagement Associate, at JNamkung@ocanational.org or (202) 223-5500 x119.

OCA Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act
OCA partnered with the Southeast Asian Resource Action Center (SEARAC) and other national Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Ally Groups to reflect on the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The program consisted of speeches from Congressional Representatives including US Reps Mike Honda (CA-17), Ted Lieu (CA-33), and Xavier Becerra (CA-34) highlighting the INA's legacy in Re-defining American. A panel made up representatives from Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, Asian American Advancing Justice, and the DC Latino Caucus followed in which individuals discussed their personal accounts of immigration and the current issues facing immigration reform today.

OCA Chapters and Families with Children from China to Host Anti-Bullying Program for Youths
Asian American students experience far higher rates of bullying in school so our chapters are taking a stand against bullying. Families with Children From China - Greater New York and OCA Long Island, New Jersey, New York, and Westchester and Hudson Valley Chapters will host an anti-bullying program for youths that helps students answer these questions:
  • How do I react to the School Bully?
  • What should I say?
  • What do I do now?

Webinar: Asian American & Pacific Islander Communities, Educational Inequity, and the Opportunity for Change
Date: Tuesday, October 20th
Time: 8pm EST
Less than 75% of many Asian-American subgroups graduate from high school. 4% of our country's student population identifies as Asian-American-but less than 1.5% of our teaching force. Asian-Americans make up 11% of undocumented immigrants in our country.
On 10/20, join Teach For America to learn more about issues of educational inequity facing Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, including historical challenges and the myth of the model minority. You'll hear from Justin Tandingan, Director of TFA's AAPI Initiative, as well as AAPI corps members and alumni currently at the forefront of education and community advocacy. This event is open to all members of OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates who are interestedin learning more about the intersection of AAPI identities and education, as well as those who want to make a direct impact on AAPI communities by building a career in this sector.
