WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates offers its condolences to the family of civil rights icon Julian Bond, following his passing on Saturday.

Mr. Bond dedicated his life to public service and advocating for equal rights for the African American community and beyond. From serving as board chairman of the NAACP to campaigning against apartheid in South Africa, Mr. Bond has helped cultivate and inspire future generations to advocate for equality. Following the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Mr. Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives which refused to seat him. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, declared the action unconstitutional, clearing the way for 20 years of dedicated service in the legislature.

“On behalf of OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates and the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, I express our deep sorrow over the passing of Julian Bond, Human Rights Advocate, Civil Rights Pioneer and a great American,” said Michael W. Kwan, OCA National President. “In a lifetime of nearly six decades of public service, at times at great personal risk, Mr. Bond's contributions helped to raise our nation up in some of its darkest times. To honor his legacy, all people of good will must now come together with a sense of unity and commitment to continue the fight that Julian Bond led for so long.  His leadership, humility and compassion will be missed greatly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
