SAN FRANCISCO, CA – OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates is partnering with Antennas Direct and the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) to give away HDTV antennas to the San Francisco Bay Area’s low-income Asian population to connect them with free in-language programing.

The giveaway will be held in Chinatown on Friday, July 3, from 8:00 am to 9:00 am, in front of the Clayton Hotel, a CCDC Single Room Occupancy hotel renovated in 1981. “40 percent of Chinatown residents live in units like this where they share bathrooms and a kitchen,” said CCDC Executive Director Norman Fong. “Units like these are a last resort of housing for the low income population who cannot afford luxuries such as cable TV,” he added.

The sources of broadcast content produced for Asian Americans are at an all-time high, giving this community more free, non-cable channels to surf than ever before. Like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Houston, San Francisco has become a hub for Asian American content with over ten stations including KTSF, Diya, MBC, ICN, VietBay, VietV1, 24Hour KPOP, Tokyo TV, and KEMS dedicated to Asian American interests and issues. “A 2009 Pew Research report estimates that 78 percent of Asian Americans consume ethnic media in addition to English-language news media to stay informed,” according to OCA Communications Associate Nick Lee. “With this high level of consumption, ethnic media represents an outsized proportion of the media consumed by the Asian American community in the United States.”

“This giveaway is the start of building a more connected Asian American media and community. These HDTV antennas will increase access within the Asian American community to a wide breadth of ethnic media sources. They will allow community members to take full advantage of growing ethnic media outlets, which will allow many of them to stay informed and engage with issues affecting the Asian American community,” said OCA Chief Executive Officer Ken Lee.

This giveaway is in conjunction with the kickoff of the OCA National Convention from July 2 – 5, at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel. Myx TV comedic personality, Kristina Wong, is keynoting the Youth Recognition Luncheon on Friday, July 3. The convention will also include free workshops and panels on topics including Asian American and Pacific Islander LGBT communities, increasing Asians in school administration, and Asian Pacific Americans in the media. The convention also offers Youth, College and Young Professional Tracks that include workshops and discussion groups on media, education, activism and politics, and career choices.
