WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.

“As a national Asian Pacific American organization, we recognize that our work and our struggles cannot be separated from those of the LGBT community. The long march for justice must include our LGBT friends, families, and allies. For the Asian Pacific American community to fully have equity and equality, so must the LGBT community. As progress for the LGBT community goes, so goes progress for all Americans,” said Michael W. Kwan, OCA National President. “It is with this in mind that OCA continues to highlight the need for equity and equality for LGBT APAs.”

OCA’s long standing history of support for the LGBT community is well documented.  In 2007, OCA became the first major APA civil rights organization to call for marriage equity without regard to gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. In 2013, OCA co-sponsored a same-sex marriage rally during the hearing of Windsor v. United States, and has also released statements regarding Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry reaffirming our support for the full civil rights of all Americans. Likewise, the annual OCA National Convention has long included workshops on LGBT advocacy for Asian Pacific Americans.

Kwan continued, “We remain dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of LGBT youth, advocating for safe schools, free from sexual orientation, gender, and gender-identity biased bullying and harassment. In recent years, at least two LGBT APA youths lost their lives as a result of bullying and harassment.  As we continue to work with law enforcement and school districts to make our schools safer, it is critical that parents better understand the needs of their LGBT children and how best to provide support. This year, the OCA National Convention will highlight this topic in our workshop ‘LGBT AAPIs: Finding the Love in Our Community’, which will feature Congressman Mike Honda as a speaker. Similarly, our partner at the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance will also be speaking in that workshop.”

The OCA National Convention will be held at the Hilton Union Square Hotel in San Francisco, CA from July 2 – 5, 2015. APA parents can find stories about other APA parents and the love for their LGBT children in English and multiple Asian American languages at the NQAPIA website.

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership-driven organization of community advocates dedicated to advancing the political, social, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
