WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates and a coalition of Asian American advocacy groups and elected officials, call upon Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate the
Sherry Chen case for possible use of racial profiling.

In October 2014, Sherry Chen was accused of espionage in her role as a hydrologist at the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio. After being humiliated by being handcuffed and escorted away in front of her coworkers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation dropped their charges for lack of evidence. It has been suggested that the primary reason for her arrest was her ethnicity.

“We call upon Attorney General Lynch to investigate the possibility of the use of racial profiling in the Sherry Chen case,” said OCA Chief Executive Officer Ken Lee. “We strongly urge the Department of Justice to do all that is possible to establish appropriate controls, procedures and rules that require reasonable oversight of government investigators and prosecutors. We fear that absent these controls, in the rush to curtail suspected espionage or information leaks, a failure to exercise proper restraint of racially based suspicions will lead to many more Sherry Chens in the future. OCA stands with its partners to ensure that all individuals, regardless of race, are treated with objective scrutiny. “

OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
