WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership-driven organization of community advocates dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), applauds the Senate for preventing the advancement of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Appropriations Act of 2015 (H.R. 240) by a vote of 51-48. H.R. 240 contains provisions that targets President Obama’s executive actions related to immigration.

“We commend our Senate leaders for preventing the movement of this anti-immigrant bill. The bill at hand renders both the lives of immigrants and our national security as mere political leverage. The President’s executive actions would help over 500,000 undocumented Asian Pacific Islanders become even stronger contributors to American society,” said Ken Lee, OCA National CEO.

“As the host of nearly 40 paid internships for Asian American and Pacific Islander students in Washington DC, OCA is witness to the positive effects of the implementation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals in 2012,“ comments Stan Lou, OCA National Vice President of Education and Culture. “Of the over 600,000 young undocumented adults DACA has helped, one was a member of the 2014 OCA summer intern class. His contributions to OCA, his fellow interns and his internship host were invaluable. To hold his and thousands of other young people’s potential hostage would be a huge disservice to American society. Congress must pass a clean DHS funding bill. OCA will continue to advocate to ensure that the bill reaching the President’s desk is free from anti-immigrant language.”
