WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership-driven organization of community advocates dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), mobilizes day of action on National Voter Registration Day.

Every year on September 23, thousands of nonprofit organizations and community partners across the country coordinate a collective push to register new voters for National Voter Registration Day. This one-day event brings voter registration to millions of Americans through social media, voter registration drives, and innovative technology.

“One of the biggest hurdles to voting for Asian Pacific Americans is registration,” said Sharon M. Wong, OCA National President. “It is more important than ever for our communities to ensure that our voices are heard at the ballot box this November.  National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity for OCA to ensure that APAs register to vote.”

In 2012, only 56% of eligible APA voters registered to vote, lower than Latino Americans and significantly lower than Black and White Americans. With 9 million APAs eligible to vote this year, OCA is mobilizing new voters on National Voter Registration Day through college campuses, supermarkets, and community events.

Below are highlights from select OCA Chapters:

  • OCA Sacramento volunteers are registering students at the California State University of Sacramento campus during Constitution week.
  •  OCA Cleveland and Asian Services In Action, Inc. are conducting voter registration drives at the Asia Town Center and Asia Plaza.
  • OCA Phoenix is utilizing social media and its community screening of Freedom Summer at the Arizona Historical Society Museum to register new APA voters.

Non-registered citizens can register to vote online. In states that do not allow online voter registration, individuals can print the form and submit it to their local Secretary of State office.
