WASHINGTON DC— OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership-driven organization of community advocates dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) and host chapter, OCA Greater Los Angeles, are pleased to announce the 2014 OCA National Convention: "On LOCAtion for AdvOCAcy,”August 7-10, 2014 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

"Los Angeles has one of the highest concentrations of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. It is exemplary display of the diversity within our community and the power of a unified voice,” says Sharon M. Wong, OCA President. "Our convention is an opportunity for our members and the Los Angeles community to learn about OCA’s accomplishments, and more importantly, to reflect on our identities as Asian Pacific Americans and how we can shape, engage, and move our community forward to strengthen civil rights for everyone."

This is the first time in 20 years that the OCA Greater Los Angeles Chapter has hosted the National Convention. This year’s theme, "On LOCAtion for AdvOCAcy,” highlights the activism and the accomplishments within the local APA communities within the context of the national APA movement, and the role they play in redefining the advocacy landscape.

The OCA Convention draws over hundreds of APAs from around the country and is one of the largest gatherings of APAs in the U.S. This year's convention will feature:

  • Workshops and Plenaries
  • Youth Recognition and Chapter Awards Luncheons
  • OCA Cultural Marketplace
  • Youth and College Tracks
  • B3 Emerging APA Professionals and Employee Resource Groups
  • Friday Night Community Event
  • OCA Gala Awards
"Los Angeles is at the forefront of advocacy work, and OCA GLA is proud to be hosting the OCA National Convention in a city that is a historical home to many Asian Pacific American firsts. We are excited to highlight the dynamic organizations and leadership that collectively contribute to the richness of our community here. It is our hope that the Convention will elevate the multitude of voices, perspectives, and experiences that move our communities towards progress,” said Lisa Thong, OCA Greater Los Angeles Chapter President.

From its inception in 1991, the Greater Los Angeles Chapter has fostered active participation in both local and national causes impacting the APA community through advocacy, organizing, leadership development, education, and service.

Over the past few years, OCA – Greater Los Angeles has helped eligible non-citizens obtain citizenship through their Mentored Path to Citizenship program; inspired local high school students to pursue non-traditional careers with their "Imma Be" Career Talk series; trained the next generation of APA advocates with their college internship and Civil Rights Fellowship programs; and continued their award-winning programming and advocacy efforts, such as our annual InQUIZitive Minds APA Trivia Night.
