OCA Announces the 2013 OCA-UPS Gold Mountain Scholars

WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership driven organization dedicated to advancing the political, social, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), is pleased to announce the 15 winners of the OCA-UPS Gold Mountain Scholarship. The scholarship awards $2,000 to high school seniors who are the first person in their family to attend college in the United States. The recipients have also demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and a commitment to their communities.   

OCA and The UPS Foundation recognize that scholarships and financial aid are important in assisting students from lower income families attain a college education. Since 1999, OCA has partnered with The UPS Foundation to award 179 scholarships for a total of $328,000, including 15 scholarships this year.  

"By pursuing dreams of higher education, these high achieving students can have a profound effect on their own lives and the communities around them,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. "Through these scholarships, UPS and OCA are providing the first step toward a successful future.”  

"The OCA-UPS Gold Mountain scholarships offer more than just financial assistance. It provides an opportunity for our youth to develop their knowledge into becoming leaders for their communities,” said OCA National President Sharon M. Wong.    

OCA honored four scholars at the OCA National Convention on July 18 – 21 in Washington, DC, in celebration of our 40th Year Anniversary.  Jia Chen, Grace Kim, Kimberly Nguyen, and Gabriel Rakin attended the convention Youth Track and were recognized during the Gala Awards Banquet.
