The annual State Farm JACL/OCA Leadership Conference is designed to introduce OCA and JACL leaders to the political process by having them meet with members of Congress, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Administration officials, government agencies, as well as with OCA’s and JACL’s colleagues in the Washington, D.C. social justice community.

This annual leadership training conference is a joint program operated by the JACL (Japanese American Citizens League) and OCA, the two largest Asian Pacific American membership-based civil rights organizations in the United States. This four-day conference gives 30 emerging leaders of the JACL and OCA an opportunity to learn firsthand about the current public policy issues facing our communities. Previous topics included: immigration, post 9/11 policies, Hurricane Katrina briefings, coalition building, non-profit lobbying, grassroots organizing through the internet, and media & message training.

OCA members are strongly encouraged to apply to participate in the conference. In the past, it has proven to be extremely helpful to members in realizing how OCA chapters can most effectively work with OCA National Center on issues important to the APA community.

2010

From March 5-9, another extraordinary group of leaders from JACL and OCA along with members from our coalition partners, LANA and NAPABA came to Washington DC to participate in a variety of leadership development activities.

Take a look at this year's Agenda to see what issues were addressed and which speakers came out!

"I learned the importance of networking, building relationships, organizing and building coalitions. I will use the skills and leadership I have learned to strengthen and better organization my grassroots community."

"This was a wonderful experience. Workshops hit on the relevant topics and seeing the memorial and internment exhibits drove home the importance of being vigilant and continuing the battle for social justice for all groups."

"Before I came to this conference, I had passion but I didn't know what to do with it. I wanted to change the world, but did not how. Under the guidance of OCA and JACL, I learned to be an effective leader and community organizer."

"The intermingling of local issues, local politics, local chapter structure and collaboration good and bad was very interesting and helpful in allowing me to think about our approach back home and how it would be better addressed. There will be many more conversation in sharing the ideas and action plans I’ve learned this week as I return to further improve the state of our chapter, and in turn, the welfare of my neighborhoods."
