Asian Pacific Americans have been historically underrepresented in the federal court system. Until the recent confirmation of Judge Denny Chin to the U.S. Court of Appeals to the Second Circuit, there were no Asian Pacific American judges among the approximately 175 active federal appellate court jurists nationwide. Prior to Judge Chin’s confirmation, it had been over five years since an Asian Pacific American federal actively served as an appellate court judge. In the history of the United States, only four Asian Pacific Americans had ever served as federal appellate court judges.The disproportion of APA population to APA judges is a discrepancy that OCA will strive to address. What's Happening Now:

August 6^th will be the one year anniversary of Judge Edward Chen’s nomination. He has waited longer for a senate vote than any other judicial nominee. The August recess is approaching and may require him to wait longer if the Senate refuses to vote on his confirmation before adjourning.

Judge Chen’s confirmation would be a great step in building a foundation for Asian Pacific Americans to serve as a federal judge at all levels. If he is confirmed, Judge Chen will be the first Asian Pacific American Article III judge in San Francisco’s history.
