3:10PM - 3:30PM DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, WAGE AND HOUR DIVISION

The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for administering and enforcing federal labor laws. In this panel, WHD investigators will discuss what every small business owner must do to comply with these laws. Topics will include minimum wage, overtime, recordkeeping, and youth employment. 


3:30PM - 3:45PMOCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

Kim Anh Nguyen, P.E., Safety Engineer
OSHA, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, is responsible for enforcing workplace safety and health federal laws; developing mandatory job safety and health standards; providing outreach, education and compliance assistance; and promoting partnerships and cooperative programs. In this panel, OSHA officers will discuss the inspection priorities, inspection process, citation, monetary penalties, contest process and small business assistance programs.


3:45PM – 4:15PMIMMIGRANT AND MINORITY EMPLOYMENT ISSUES
Attorney Avalyn C. Langemeier, Quan, Burdette & Perez
Attorney Trang Q. Tran, Tran Law Firm
Attorneys Langemeier and Tran each have over a decade of experience in immigration and employment law. In this panel, Ms. Langemeier will discuss immigration issues such as recent developments with the Form I-9 employment eligibility and verification process, including employer liability, and sponsoring foreign workers for permanent residence.


Mr. Tran will discuss what legal remedies an immigrant or minority worker can pursue if he feels he has been the victim of employment discrimination, wrongful termination, or a violation of federal employment law.


4:15PM – 5:00PMAUDIENCE QUESTIONS & BRIEF CONSULTATIONS
During this period, all members of today’s panel will be available for questions from audience members, either addressed before the audience or in smaller groups at the back of the room.


Materials available in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Chinese and Vietnamese translators will also be available.
