Nationally, Asian Pacific Americans are the fastest-growing targets of hate crimes. OCA Greater Houston is organizing a series of 3 different free seminars targeting 3 separate populations of APIA high school students, college students, and working adults. Professor Mark E. Steiner from the South Texas College of Law will address how the rise of the passive model minority stereotype of Asian Pacific Americans has consequently led to a rise in crimes against this community.

OCA Greater Houston is organizing a series of 3 different free seminars targeting 3 separate populations of APIA high school students, college students, and working adults. Professor Mark E. Steiner from the South Texas College of Law will address how the rise of the passive model minority stereotype of Asian Pacific Americans has consequently led to a rise in crimes against this community. He will also discuss how to recognize a hate crime and how these issues are defined by law. Pei-Un Yee, OCA National Hate Crimes Awareness Program Coordinator will address what to do if you are the victim of a hate crime and how hate crimes can be prevented. 


Free copies of OCA's Responding to Hate Crimes: A Community Action Guide will be distributed.

This 2pm seminar targets high school students and is scheduled as a part of our College Leadership Day in partnership with the Vietnamese Student Assn. (VSA) at Rice University. This seminar is one of several workshops aimed at helping students prepare for college and to raise awareness of issues that impact the community. It is an all-day program from 8am-4pm at Martell Hall on the Rice University campus.
